Verdun again?

It seems that the Lynx have played Verdun about 5 times in the past 3 weeks.  Well it certainly feels like that.

Well this game was a great one until the Lynx came up to bat in the fifth inning.  It was a 1-0 nothing gave in the Lynx favour on the strength of a Nick Trainor blast in the first inning.

Trainor did not give up a hit through the first 5 innings, but seemed to have people on base in every inning due to walks.

But the fifth inning was an eventful one.  The bases were loaded with the hot hitting Nick Schneider coming up.  He lined a ball over the second baseman to the gap for a 3 run double.  Ben Zoldan scored all the way from first.  He was intent on scoring from the crack of the bat.  The Lynx aded 2 more runs in the inning.

In top of the sixth, Verdun managed to get a run off of Nick Trainor, which was coincidentally the inning that Trainor gave up his first hit.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Lynx punched in 4 more runs to run the tally to 10-1, and Trainor pitched a perfect 7th inning to get the complete game win.

But, as is often the base in NDG, the real story were the umpires.   This game was one of the more eventful ones.

With Adam Ferguson on second base, he took too far of a lead off of second when the pitch was thrown and the catcher threw down.  Ferguson who has great speed appreared to have gotten under the tag of the shortstop.  But the umpire called him out.  That call was excusable.

How's this for a call.  With a runner on second base, a roller was hit to the infield and the ball was thrown to first base.  The runner was clearly out, and the umpire called him out.  The runner on second faked going to third and first baseman Nick Schneider threw the ball over.  Then out of nowhere, the umpire declared that the batter was safe at first.  Now it's a cardinal rule in umpiring that once you make a judgement call you really should stick with it.  This led to many many questions from the NDG coaches but no answer could be reached on why he was safe at first.

But the Lynx got that call back, but "turning" a nice double play in which the batter beat the throw to first by a good step, and the umpire called him out.  Give some you take some.

The coup de grace was when Zan Symonds was at shortstop and he asked the umpire to please move because he couldn't see the pitch.  The umpire refused to move on inch.  This brought Nick Trainor to say some words to the umpire, and assistant coach Roger Harte came out.  The umpire said, "I'm tired of moving."   Roger then retorted with "Get a brain."  Nothing like a good quick comment from Mr. Harte to put the game in perspective.

Zan Symonds finally broke out of his long slump with 3 hits in the game, including a double.  Experts say that it's his new bat that's giving him this ability.
