Lynx get back on track
The Lynx were at home against Verdun, even though the game was supposed to be in Verdun. Verdun's parks are closed at this point in time, due to a strike, so they use NDG's Loyola park as their home field.
The Lynx were in dire need to a win after getting swept by St-Jerome on the weekend. The start of the game proved this might be a bit difficult.
The Lynx came up to bat first, since their were the visiting team. Brock Bradley got hit with a pitch, and worked his way around the basepaths to come around to score on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the first, Zan Symonds took to the hill. A few walks, an error, and a few bloop singles later, Verdun had punched across 4 runs. For the rest of the game, the NDG outfielders of Nick Trainor, Ben Zoldan, and Brad Thomas played very, very shallow to take away all of those cheap hits. In each of the next 2 innings, the Lynx scored 1 run, while Verdun didn't score any thanks to good pitching, and solid defense. From the 4th inning on, it was all Lynx. In each of the next innings, they scored runs using smart hitting, sacrifices, great baserunning, and superb coaching. Verdun got a run in the sixth inning off of Symonds, which led to him being taken out of the game. Adam Ferguson came into the game and got the third out of the sixth, and pitched a good seventh, to close out the game.
The Lynx got a little scare in the bottom of the seventh, when with Ferguson pitching, the batter lined the ball into center field. Trainor came in for it, and at the last second lost it in the lights. The ball hit him square in the knee and bounced back into the infield. He was in considerable pain, and "medical expert" Roger Harte came out to remedy the situation. Trainor finished off the game.
Another note about Trainor. With Brock Bradley on first base, and the count 3-0, the batter is supposed to take the pitch right? Not if your name is Nick Trainor. The pitcher grooved him a perfect pitch, and he hit the ball on a line into center field. It was hit so hard, that when the center fielder tried to play it off the short hop, it went by him to the fence, and Bradley came into score, and Trainor ended up on third. You have to be mighty confident to swing at 3-0, but when you a superstar like Trainor is, you can do what you want.
A clever little note here is that the Verdun starting pitcher hit a batter in each of his first 3 innings. The first being Brock Bradley, the Donald Cole got him squarely in the solarplexis. The third victim was Nick Trainor, who got him on the leg with a bad curve. Going into the game, the Lynx had been hit 15 times, and those 3 will add to the totals, making it a whopping 18 times.
The only player not to have a hit going into the game was Brad Thomas. But in his final at bat, he saw a fastball on the inside corner and roped it into left field. First base coach Roger Harte signlaled him to go to second, and Thomas was safe on a very close play, hence legging out a single into a double.
Another stats note here, Ben Zoldan added to his team lead in strikeouts at 7, by K'ing 4 times. After his fourth time he came to the bench and stated, "Can someone please tell me not to swing at the high ones?".
Defensive Highlight of the game: In one of the middle innings, Symonds was still on the hill, and Brad Thomas was in right field. With Thomas playing very shallow, the right handed batter hit a shot towards the right field corner. Thomas got on his horse early, seeing it off the bat very well. He made a very fine running catch in the right field corner to get the second out of the inning. That's when assistant coach Roger Harte would say, "God shot buddy! Good wheels!" If you don't know what wheels is, that means, in plain english, was to run fast. Roger Harte is known to be sometimes incoherent at times.
But, bar none, the quote of the day was in the sixth inning, 2 outs, and the bases loaded, Jason Doucet was coming the to plate. Verdun decided to change pitchers. Doucet, a skillfull opposite field bloop singles hitter said, "Bring in anyone." Impying that no matter who they brought in, he would hit him. Doucet promptly hit a weak infield fly ball to the second baseman to end the inning, and end any chance for more runs in the inning.
Here's a very interesting note about the team. They have struck out 51 times, and walked 68 times, going into last nights game. If you add their 15 hit by pitch to that, you have that they walk or get hit 1.6 times to every time they strike out. If you aren't a savant of the sport, that's a damn good average.
And Guess what's back?!?! FERGY'S 3 STARS! You remember it from 1997 fame, from Midget AA, well it's back, Jack. And remember, Fergy's 3 stars do not necessarily represent the view of coach Bobby Ferguson.
