Lynx MERCY in the Finals
Before you read any of this, you must understand the intricacies of the Mercy rule. In one team is leading by 10 runs or more, after 4 and a half inning, or any time after 4 and a half, the game is declared over.
Well, the Lynx went to the game knowing that somehow Brossard had beaten Terrebonne-Mascouche in their game on Sunday, so they were able to get into the finals. Brossard had to beat the Lynx 2 times to be crowned league champions. Too bad they couldn't do it.
It took the Lynx 5 innings to get into gear, but when they did, they powered their way to a 15 to 3 victory of the Cubbies to repeat at league champions, and winners of the Presidents cup.
In the early inning, the Lynx were down by a score of 2-1. But with on Nick Trainor swing of the bat, the was all changed. With Adam Ferguson on base, Trainor bombed a ball over the fence in left center field to put the Lynx ahead by a score of 3-2.
Then in the bottom of the fifth, the Lynx finally decided to score some runs. By the end of the fifth, the Lynx had upped the score to 7-3, and appeared to be in cruise control. It all started off when Donald Cole singled into center field. He was replaced with pinch runner Adam O'Brien Locke. Adam Ferguson then hit a shot off the wall in center field to score O'Brien Locke. Brad Thomas then hit a ball into the corner in right field for a double to score Ferguson. They then proceeded to walk Nick Trainor, but it turned out to be not to smart because on the very next pitch they lost their force outs at all bases, when a passed ball enabled both runners to advance. Anthony DiMambro grounded a ball through the legs of the third baseman and Thomas and Trainor both scored on the play. Designated runner Jason Doucet replaced DiMambro at second base. He advanced on another passed ball, and scored on a beautiful squeeze play by Brock Bradley. And with Trainor dominating on the hill, it looked like the game was in the bag.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lynx exploded in true Lynx form. Adam Casey led off the inning by taking 4 straight balls that were either thrown at him or behind him. One out later, Adam Ferguson worked his way on. So with 2 runners, Brossard switched pitchers. The new pitcher promply walked Brad Thomas to load the bases for Nick Trainor. The outcome could have been much worse for the Cubs, because Trainor hit a sacrifice fly to left field. Anthony DiMambro stepped up to the plate and hit a little something that NDG likes to call a 3-run homer over the left field fence. So, the score stood at 11-3 at this point. The Lynx still needed 2 more runs to mercy the Cubs. The Cubs then loaded up the bases with 3 consecutive walks to bring up the 10th batter of the inning, Adam Casey. You might recall that earlier this inning, he had taken those 4 pitches nowhere near the plate. Casey took a strike much to the delight of the Brossard bench. Next pitch, well, what do you know, but it looks like Adam Casey has a grand slam, to slam the door on the Cubs, this tournament, and on the Lynx season. There was no more fitting way to end the season with a grand slam.
That number 5 from Brossard had a fine game, as he was still running his mouth, even after the game, he had a few comments to say about how the plate umpire had cost Brossard the game. Well, if that's what he wants to believe, I thinks it's all for the better that he does just that.
Fergy's 3 stars:
3. Anthony DiMambro - had a great day at the plate, highlighted by a 3 run homer.
2. Adam Casey - nothing finer that finishing off the game with a grand slam.
1. Nick Trainor - a complete game and a 2 run homer.
