Let's play 2!
Second Game:
The only word that could describe this game was UGLY. The Lynx pounded out about a million hits and scored 17 runs. They won the game 17-3.
The starting pitcher was Nick Trainor, and after a perfect first 2 innings, he got into some trouble in the third, when he gave up one run. Then in the fourth, after walking a few, and some botched hits batsmen calls by the umpires, the bases were loaded with no outs. This prompted a pitching change as Brad Thomas came in from center field. He induced the first 2 batters to pop up into infield fly's and struck out the third batter he faced. Trainor went back into the game after that, and pitcher very well, not giving up any more runs. In the bottom of the seventh, Adam Ferguson came in to pitch. He gave up one run, which was due largely to the Jason Doucet error at shortstop. But the game ended on a great note. With a runner on third, the batter hit a fly ball to center field, Trainor caught the ball and the runner tried to tag up from third. Trainor, the owner of a gun for an arm, threw a strike to the plate, to the waiting hands of catcher Adam Casey. The runner saw that he was dead, and attempted some funky kind of jump to be safe, but Casey just tagged him in mid air, and pushed him up higher, which led to gravity to do it's work as he hit the ground. Assistant Coach Roger Harte said this of the play, "It's good to have a catcher who plays some football."
Now on to the hitting. Well obviously anyone who say the game would have to look at Nick Trainor. One time when up at bat, the pitcher grooved him a pitch, and Trainor new exactly what to do with it. He hit it about 400 feet high, and bounced on the room of the arena and over. That ball would have been out of any park. Before his next at bat, Bobby Lewis said to him, "Let's see if you can hit it out to center." Well, that's just what he did. He lined the ball right out of the park to center field, for his second homer of the day. In his last at bat, he got walked on some really bad pitches. Smart pitcher.
Just about everyone on the team had a good game at the plate, except of course for Brad Thomas. Now is it possible to be called out 6 times in a single game? Why yes it is. And Thomas accomplished this fact with style. After a walk in the first inning, Thomas was caught foolishly off of third base and was picked off. His next at bat resulted with a walk, and Nick Trainor grounded a ball that forced him out at second base. His next 2 at bats resulted in the K's. His fifth plate appearance had him grounding out to the second baseman. It was a bit more solid than his last at bats. Then in his sixth and final at bat of the day, he hit a deep fly ball to center field, in where the center fielder played on the fence for the whole game, and it finally paid off, as Thomas was retired for the 6th time of the day.
But Thomas was basically the only one the team who wasn't hitting well. Ben Zoldan had a great game at the plate, and this comment was overhead from Zoldan, "Since I can't count past 3, I don't know how many hits I have." Sign of a true athlete that's for sure.
Donald Cole showed some very good hustle on the base paths today. He went hard down the line on 2 singles, and as a result of this ended up on second base after some bad throws.
To document everyone's hitting prowess in this game would take about a week, so I'm just going to say that everyone hit very well in this game, and the Terrence Doucet cups will be awarded on Wednesday.
Tuesday the team faces Brossard with insiders saying that Brad Thomas will get the start.
