Lynx keep on rollin', coach goes crazy

The Lynx were well rested after their double header on Sunday, and were ready to play Verdun.  The Lynx were missing center fielder and Nick Trainor, and Anthony DiMambro.  But Verdun was in a worse predicament.  Apparently, on Tuesday while playing Brossard, Verdun had 6 of their players thrown out of the game, and only had 9.

As you should know by now, the game was played at the Lynx home field of Loyola due to the Verdun park problem.

Well, Adam Ferguson was on the hill for the Lynx to start the game, but he had to wait till the Lynx hit because they were the visiting team.  The Lynx went down 1-2-3 in the first inning, and Verdun came up to bat.  Verdun had 2 runners on base, but were not able to score any runs.  The game was tied 0-0 until the fifth inning, when after a Bobby Lewis single, he advanced to second on a passed ball.  Zan Symond then flied out to left not advancing the runner.  Then Nick Schneider came up to bat and lined a double into the gap in left center scoring Lewis.  In the following inning, Brock Bradley led off with a single, took second and scored on a Ben Zoldan double.  Verdun scored in the bottom of the sixth, but were shut down in the bottom of the seventh, hence the Lynx win 2-1.

Kudos to Adam Ferguson for pitching the whole game, and a hell of game it was.

But, enough with the scores, here's what really went on.

The real story of the game was the umpires.

In the first inning, after a lead off single by the Verdun hitter, the next batter hit it to second baseman Adam O'Brien Locke.  He bobbled the ball a bit, and then threw it to first.  Bobby Lewis made a fine stretch for the out.  But wait, what was the call?  He was called safe as the umpire decided that Lewis' foot had come off the bag.  The first call of the game and already coach Bob Ferguson had to come out and argue.

Within that same inning, there was a runner on third base, and a shallow fly ball was hit to left.  Ben Zoldan came running in and caught it, and seeing the runner on third was too far off, threw a perfect strike to Brock Bradley.  It was a close play, but not that close.  He was called safe.  This led Bob Ferguson on a tirade again.  Nothing like having two botched calls in the same inning.

The coup-de-grace for NDG was in the second.  A very shallow fly ball was hit to left and Ben Zoldan came running in and made a great sliding catch. He then held up his glove and took the ball out, indicating that he had indeed caught it.   The home plate ump, who had come running up the line ruled that he had trapped the ball.  If you know the physics of a sliding catch, it's next to impossible to trap the ball.

Verdun had one instance of bad calls, but it resulted in some fun.

In the top of the seventh, Zan Symonds was up at the plate.  The pitch was a close pitch and Symonds checked his swing.  The pitch was ruled   ball, making the Verdun coach some out of the dugout, screaming and yelling in french.  Many, many, many, many expletives later, he was thrown out of the game.   And, oh boy, that's when the fireworks went off.  The coach yelled a whole lot more, but even picked up some dirt and threw it at the umps knees.  That's not a typo, his knees.  The then kicked some dirt on his shoes.  Where does he think he is?  The majors?  Ahh, it was quite a spectacle.

Fergy's 3 stars

Honourable mention:  Ben Zoldan for making those great plays, but were they to be called outs, he would certainly be in the top 3.

3. Brock Bradley and Ben Zoldan - for combining for the second, and winning run.
2. Bobby Lewis and Nick Schneider - for combining for the first run
1. Adam Ferguson - for pitching a hell of a game
